Three Editors To Join The Ranks of Beast Los Angeles and Beast New York

Beast Editorial brings on three new editors; Stéphane Pereira and Kyle Brown join Beast Los Angeles and Karen Kourtessis joins the New York office.

"We're excited to welcome Stéphane to the Beast family," Jerry Sukys, Executive Producer at Beast LA says. "His work is stylish, elegant and brings a new level of sophistication to our roster." True words. Early on the road to LA, Stéphane Pereira worked freelance in Paris cutting documentaries. If immediate associations include romantic flickers of black and white, a wisp of cigarette smoke, art as subsistence; no guarantee, but likely accurate. Afterwards came commercials for iconic brands including Peugeot, Dior, Nike, Kenzo, Sprite and BMW.

Pereira has crafted fantastic worlds and stories in his collaborations with directors such as Lionel Mougin, Antoine Bardou-Jacquet and The Elvis. He has also enhanced the work of Gerard Depardieu, George Clooney and Kate Winslet in features, including "Asterix & Obelix: Meet Cleopatra," the 4th highest grossing film of all time at the French box office. "I am happy to join the Beast team," Pereira smiles, "and look forward to the broad reach they offer with all of their locations."

A child of hippies, Kyle Brown's commitment to independent thinking and unique creativity is only upstaged by his zen-like tenacity. Brown entered the industry as a personal assistant with full intention to land in the edit bay. Consider that intention manifested, and with style. After freelancing for many years, he now enjoys the reputation of a yes-man of the best kind; taking on any and all projects asked of him. His vast body of work includes campaigns, short films, documentaries and two seasons of a comedy series for Starz, in addition to Fiat, Visit Florida, Pepsi and Jack Daniels on his commercial reel. "When it comes to my clients' experience, environment and culture are everything," Brown asserts. "At Beast, I've found a creative house with amazing people, resources, and drive to do great work."

Karen Kourtessis' career launched with the U.S. Army where she shot and edited training films and news stories. When she scrapped her fatigues and moved to New York City, she landed a position at Crew Cuts and cut her teeth editing for brands such as Visa, Pepsi, Pizza Hut and Dr. Pepper. In 2006, she was invited to be a partner at Crew Cuts and proudly held that position until early 2013. Karen's work is characterized by engaging storytelling with comedy, documentary, visual style and scripted storytelling all being award-winning genres for her.

In addition to commercial pieces, she's cut music videos for artists such as Lloyd Banks, Ryan Leslie and Melanie Fiona. Her film work includes award-winning shorts, documentaries for Google and a short documentary that premiered at the Newport Beach Film Festival. "I've always loved the work coming out of Beast," says Kourtessis. "When I met the guys, I knew it would be the right fit for me. The work they do means everything to them and I feel the same way. I'm really happy to be here – not to mention I can cut in seven different cities!"

NVIDIA Uses AI to Slash Bandwidth on Video Calls

NVIDIA Research has invented a way to use AI to dramatically reduce video call bandwidth while simultaneously improving quality

What the researchers have achieved has remarkable results: by replacing the traditional h.264 video codec with a neural network, they have managed to reduce the required bandwidth for a video call by an order of magnitude. In one example, the required data rate fell from 97.28 KB/frame to a measly 0.1165 KB/frame – a reduction to 0.1% of required bandwidth.

Union Health Plan Dodges Film Workers’ Suit Over Virus Relief

Law360 (October 9, 2020, 5:22 PM EDT) — The Motion Picture Industry Health Plan’s board can’t be sued under ERISA for allegedly flouting its duties when it relaxed plan rules in response to COVID-19, a California federal judge has ruled, nixing a proposed class action filed by two cinematographers who still couldn’t qualify for benefits.

In an order entered Thursday, U.S. District Judge R. Gary Klausner granted the board of directors’ motion to dismiss Greg Endries and Dee Nichols’ Employee Retirement Income Security Act suit accusing board members of breaching their duty to treat all plan participants fairly.

Endries and Nichols, members of Local 600 of the International Cinematographers Guild, said in July that the board left them and others “out in the cold” in its attempts to address the problems COVID-19 caused for plan participants.

But Judge Klausner agreed with the board’s contention that the case, which alleged a fiduciary breach, should be tossed because plan administrators don’t act as fiduciaries when they amend health care plans.

Russo Brothers Received Close to $50 Million From Saudi Bank

Anthony Russo and Joseph Russo photographed at the PMC Studio in Los Angeles for the Variety Playback Podcast.

The Russo brothers, directors of the all-time top grossing film “Avengers: Endgame,” quietly secured a roughly $50 million cash infusion for their production company AGBO from Saudi Arabia earlier this year, multiple sources tell Variety.

In a deal brokered and closed at the beginning of the pandemic, the Russos received the investment from an undisclosed Saudi bank in exchange for a minority stake in the brothers’ Los Angeles-based shop.
