Film historian, scholar and teacher Annette Michelson passed away at 95 on September 17th. Known both for her sharp intellect and suffer-no-fools attitude, she helped start the program in cinema history and criticism at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. Michelson taught there for several decades.
Michelson brought an appreciation for avant garde media to Artforum magazine with issues such as that on ‘underground’ filmmaker Stan Brakhage. After a dispute with the new editor at the magazine, she left to begin the highly respected magazine October with art critic Rosalind Krauss, giving full voice to her intellectual, politically engaged writing.
