UTICA — Awards and recognition go hand-in-hand at the annual Sundance Film Festival in Utah.

This year, a film with connections to the Mohawk Valley, “We The Animals,” got a little recognition after it tied with “Night Comes On” for the 2018 Sundance NEXT Innovator Award.

“We The Animals” is based on Justin Torres’ semi-autobiographical novel by the same name. The Bildungsroman follows three brothers as they grow up with parents in an abusive marriage. Many of its scenes were shot in Utica and the surrounding area.

“It’s loosely based on the author’s life that he grew up in a small town not too far from Utica,” said Jeremy Yaches, a producer and director of “We The Animals.”
